MILLSTONE HISTORY

Millstones, such as those offered by Millstones.com, are relics of an agrarian society. The technology is older than the Bible, and often quoted. They were used to grind corn into corn meal, or grits. Symbols of the harvest and hospitality, they make great garden and patio focal points, markers, fountains, signs, you name it. View Millstones.com's photo galleries to see our millstones, syrup kettles and more! We've shipped these to many talented designers across the country, and they've sent us a lot of pictures with great ideas. All the history that we know of is attached to eah one, And of course, we ship.

We don't cast our syrup kettles. These are original, from some foundries that predate the Civil War and ran up to the depression when they went out of business. Most are over 100 years old. Fabulous as fountain bases, firepits, or planters, the kettles come in four basic sizes, 50 gallon, 60G, 80G, 100G, dimensionally 48-60 inches in diameter. Some carry foundry marks including the Georgia cities of Columbus, Savannah, and Macon, and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Some are plain and have no marks at all. All are catalogued with pictures, provenance and dimensions online under the "inventory" tab. Spend time on our "portfolio" tabs to see what other clever landscape architects have done. Soup to nuts, Millstones.com provides full service including nationwide shipping.

Maine Millstones produces authentic, hand-carved granite millstones for both historic gristmill restorations and for use in the garden. Maine Millstones is the last producers of authentic, hand-carved granite millstones in the USA. Since the majority of the millstones we sell are used in the landscape industry, and since most customers want a millstone that looks old, we have developed a method for antiquing our stones. The result is a millstone that fits the site requirements, looks historic, and adds charm to the landscape, whether used in a patio or walkway, as tables, fountains, doorsteps or focal points. We also have a collection of historic millstones and would be happy to discuss their appropriateness for your application.
